Thirsty cup football tournament ANS-Pomeroy retains boys 19 title

CEBU, Philippines - The decorated Abellana National School (ANS)-Pomeroy lived up to their lofty billing as they retained their title in the boys 19 division of the 7th Thirsty Cup football tournament yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Actually, ANS and Don Bosco Alumni Football Club-A finished with identical 4-1 win-loss records, but ANS clinched the crown by virtue of a one-point advantage in goal difference over the Bosconians, 10-9.

“It was a tough job for my players since our opponents really prepared well for this tournament. But I’m glad that despite the crucial moments, the boys still were in control of the game and manage to retain the title,” said ANS coach Francis Ramirez.

ANS-Pomeroy now shifts its focus to claiming back-to-back titles in the boys 17 class where it has two strong championship contenders.

“They have greater chances of getting into the finals but we know that the ball is round. There will be lot of things that’s going to happen but I’m keeping my fingers crossed hoping that these teams would make it,” added Ramirez.

In the Boys 12 category, Pomeroy Football Club bannered by Cebu City Central School (CCCS) players beat Sacred Heart School-Jesuit (SHS-J) via penalty shootout, 2-1, to bring home the champion’s trophy.

M.Lhuillier-Canduman, on the other hand, dominated the players 6 division via four-game sweep of Saint John of Kenty School, Big Boy-Watch Repair, Bright Academy and San Roque Football Club.

In the distaff side, the University of San Carlos claimed the girls 19 tiara with a 3-0-1 win-loss-draw mark, while Atletica de Cebu bagged the second place honors.

The visiting San Carlos City lorded it over in the girls 12 with an immaculate 4-0 slate followed by Subangdaku Football Club with a 3-0-1 record.   (FREEMAN NEWS)
