Danao eyes grand CVIRAA staging

CEBU, Philippines - Danao City has already proven itself as a gracious host to several sporting events both local and international. This time, it is faced with another challenge not only to successfully stage this year’s Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Regional Meet on February 8 to 14 but also to bring prestige and importance to this week-long sports conclave.

The city’s sports commission chairman and councilor Oscar “Boying” Rodriguez, Jr. said that based on his observation the true essence of CVIRAA has been neglected inspite of the grand opening it had during the past editions.

“The importance of CVIRAA has been waning. We want to restore the prestige and importance of this event.We want to set the bar higher,” Rodriguez said in a press conference yesterday at Pino! Restaurant.

“We want to make this CVIRAA an event to remember. I know those who have gone to Danao before have not forgotten us, but this time it will be a better Danao that they will see,” Rodriguez added.

The security and safety of the 9,000-plus delegates have also been ensured, with the entire police force of Danao and barangay tanods have been mobilized to secure the entire city.

 In addition to that, DepEd regional director Recaredo Borgonia assured of a smooth flow of the event and warned that stiff sanctions will be meted upon those who want to disrupt the event or even those want to cheat.

Borgonia reiterated that the CVIRAA is done not only as a plain sporting event but as a way to impart the values on excellence, personal discipline, sportsmanship and give the athletes the opportunity to exercise unity and cooperation.

And for the first time in the history of CVIRAA, DepEd-VII will go high-tech in delivering the results to the different teams and the media.

A website on CVIRAA will be linked to DepEd-VII’s homepage for everyone to see the progress of the event.

All events except for elementary tennis and swimming will be held in Danao City. Elementary tennis will be in Liloan, while swimming will be contested at the Cebu City Sports Center.   (FREEMAN NEWS)
