Talisay sweeps three titles in Gullas Cup

CEBU, Philippines - It’s a triple celebration for Talisay City as it did not only defend its basketball title, but also swept the men and women’s volleyball crowns last Wednesday at the Carcar Sports Complex.

Talisay City defeated host Carcar to reign supreme in men’s volleyball for the second straight year. So dominants the Talisaynons were that they hauled all the individuals bannered by Norvie “Making” Labuga, who emerged as the MVP on top of his best libero citation.

Ariel Carumba was named as the best attacker, Ronald Moreno the best setter, Lowel Tipgos the best server and Kevin Rey Casia the best defensive player.

In the battle for third, Minglanilla upended Naga.

Interestingly, the first to fourth placers in the women’s division are the same as in the men’s bracket with Talisay emerging on top.

Talisay star player Mechelle Matuguina flashed the biggest smile as she bagged the MVP trophy as well as the best block award. Her equally-talented teammates Florian Gutierrez and Juller Mae Marikit were honored as the best setter and best attacker, respectively.

Carcar got a slice of the cake with Apple Saraum being adjudged as the best libero, while her teammates Erika Camille Verano and Judy Dianne Navaja were the best server and best defender.

In basketball, the Talisay hardcourt warriors pocketed P30,000 for winning the championship, while runner-up San Fernand took home P25,000.

Naga got P15,000 for placing third, while Carcar and Sibonga received P10,000 each as consolation prize.

The Mythical Five, on the other hand, is composed of league MVP Roger Ray Pogoy (offguard) and Christopher Obeso (power forward) of Talisay, Mariano Canonigo (center) of Minglanilla, Jerus Ceniza (small forward) of Naga and Jun Vincent Pasilan (pointguard) of San Fernando.   (FREEMAN NEWS)
