Catmon wins big in Guv Cup quarters

- Marigold Lebumfacil -

CEBU, Philippines - Reigning champions Catmon started its title retention bid with a resounding note after trouncing the equally tough Minglanilla 25-13, 25-21 in the municipal cluster quarterfinals of the 5th Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup yesterday at the Cebu International Convention Center in Mandaue City.

Catmon lady spikers didn’t waste time in showing their might by combining powerful attacks and solid defense to eke out a 25-13 first set win.

In the second set, Catmon faced a tougher Minglanilla squad but still manage to win.

The volleybelles of Coach Vilma Veloso proved steadier when Minglanilla started to attack with Methosheena Bate, Athena Sucalit, Catherine Marquez, Lanie Silvestre, Jerymie Montalvo, Gretchel Soltones and Cristy Sucalit, providing the spunk.

Two other teams – Liloan and Barili – join Catmon in the winner’s circle.

Team Liloan silenced Sta. Fe 25-13, 25-18, while Barili took three sets to hurdle Boljoon 25-17, 21-25, 25-16.

In the men’s bracket, Liloan (known as the home of volleyball stalwarts in the Queen City of the South) dominated Dumanjug 25-10, 15-15 to jumpstart its drive for the title.

RP Team member Jonrey Sasing and former USPF stalwarts Angellan Visoc, Clifford Café, Maynard Alijandrino and James Ryan Rivera banner the squad mentored by Coach Ondo Mosqueda.

The hard-hitting Liloanons are hoping to sweep their quarterfinals assignments.

As of this writing, the other men’s quarterfinals were still underway.

The top four teams from each category will automatically advance to the semifinals next Saturday along with the city cluster semifinalists.

Mandaue and Talisay are leading the city cluster in both the men’s and women’s division.

Games in the city cluster features Mandaue against Carcar while second ranked Talisay clashes with Danao in the women’s division. The men’s division, Talisay plays Carcar and Mandaue takes on Toledo.

The championship will be on December 20 starting at 1:00 pm.   (FREEMAN NEWS)
