Ateneans and baseball

My friends from the Ateneo Alumni Association-Cebu Chapter asked that I help them disseminate the following information to their members and the alumni of other Jesuit schools.

Although I play for La Salle in the annual golf tournament between the two alumni associations, I can’t say no to friends like Tony Pineda of Isuzu and my compadre Jack Huang, who I would say is one of those to be given much credit for uplifting the standard of basketball at Sacred Heart School-Jesuit.

Anyway, here is their announcement:

As part of the celebration of Ateneo’s Sesquicentennial (150 years), several activities have been lined up starting with the Book Launch of “150: The Ateneo Way” with author Fr. Arcilla, S.J. this 4pm at the SM Northwing and ribbon cutting for the exhibit that will last for a week.

The Cebu celebration will culminate with a mini golf tournament at the Cebu Country Club from 7 – 11am, a Thanksgiving Mass and a Blue Night at 4pm, on Friday, November 13 at the SM Northwing.

Proceeds from these projects will go to the efforts of the alumni association to improve the alma mater and also to help victims of the recent typhoons that hit the country.

For a donation of P10,000, you can get a copy of the book worth P4,500 that also covers a P1,000 donation for typhoon victims and P350 for the Ateneo de Manila University Scholarship Fund. Donors will also get a P500 ticket for the Blue Night while the remaining P5,000 will be for the alumni scholarship and Eagles’ Nest Projects.

The World Series triumph of the New York Yankees, their 27th in 40 appearances, has given me and the many fans of the team in this country a major reason to be very happy.

I was happy to note that even the sportscasters covering the games over ESPN made mention of how the Filipinos have been following the World Series after receiving email from one of the fans.

While we’re in the subject of baseball fans, I got this email from Thomas Moore, who shared to me this piece of bad news about Filipino American pitcher Tim Lincecum.

Dear Nimrod,

I’m a big fan of your column in the local Cebu paper.  If I recall correctly I think I read an article which you may or may not have written about Fil-Am professional athletes making headway in the U.S.  One of the names I read matched the one on the attached link. 

I know you too follow the game of baseball.  I was totally surprised about this story.  Lincecum is an upcoming star pitcher in the major leagues.  I hope this is just part of his “growing up” life and we  won’t hear about it ever again.

Did you get a chance to watch the entire World Series?  Those Yanks really came through and a worthwhile investment too.  I think Coach Girardi did one heck of a job this year. More power to you and The Freeman....MABUHAY

MILESTONES: Happy birthday to one of my favorite yearlings, Cavalier Andrew Costelo, who turns a year older today.

Belated greetings also to another upperclassman, Cavalier Jose Vicente ‘Butchoy’ Sievert, who turned a year older last Wednesday.

Today’s greetings go to James Relampagos, former star of the local collegiate basketball scene. The same goes to my fellow San Miguel ballclub fan Wyndee Yncierto.
