For Sir Eugene

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiones -

The former players of the University of San Carlos volleyball varsity team as well as their friends are coming together for a special volleyball event to help raise funds for Sir Eugene de la Cerna, but more importantly to show their support to their former coach.

Although I never was a student of USC in college, only in grade school, Sir Eugene was an icon in Cebu volleyball, who I have known since I was in high school playing for the rag tag UP Cebu team.

When I went back to Cebu to complete my college education and had another chance to play varsity volleyball for UP Cebu, I once again met Sir Eugene in the courts of USC Main during games of the Cebu Amateur Athletic Association.

Those from our school know him well since he is the brother of our teacher, Miss Madz de la Cerna.

I still have to get complete information about what ails Sir Eugene now, but his former players led by Glenn Soco, our president of the Cebu Volleyball Association (CEVA) are not wasting any time to get together to show their support to their mentor and “second father.”

The event is something that Cebu volleyball enthusiasts should not miss and I’m sure the activity will also be a chance to hook up with old friends and make new ones.

See you at the USC Gym on October 17.

The Visayas-based Peemayers got together at the Mactan Island Golf Club yesterday for a fellowship activity in honor of Lt. Gen. Isagani Cachuela, commander of the Central Command.

The activities started yesterday with a fun shoot and yesterday, there was a golf tournament that was participated in not only by the Peemayers, but also their friends from the civilian community.

It was a very windy day at the golf course, but then the weather held until we finished and it drizzled only late afternoon after everything was done.

More than being with the Cavaliers, the tournament also allowed me to see for myself the changes in the MIGC that have recently been introduced by the club’s general manager, Ret. Gen. Rodante Joya.

There are holes that have been stretched and some that have been shortened, but the main purpose of such is to make the course better to meet the world-class standards that they are aiming for.

I got a bonus from the event aside being among fellow Sambisigs like Lt. Col. Alex Rillera, Lt. Col. Armand Arevalo, Lt. Col. Johnny Montero, and Maj. Michael Santos, since there was a trophy at the end of the day.
