Freeman Cebu Sports

Sporty Peemayers

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñiones -

It will be a sporty Thursday and Friday for the Cavaliers (not the team from Cleveland) in Cebu and nearby areas, who will be taking part in Visayas Cavaliers’ Fellowship Meet @ Mactan.

This two-day event is hosted by the Air Force Sub-Chapter of Mactan of the PMA Alumni Association Inc. headed one of our idol yearlings, Lt. Col. Bruce Concepcion of class 1990.

I was with Cavalier Concepcion early afternoon yesterday at the clubhouse of Mactan Island Golf Club to get some last minute instructions and the latest information about the activity.

Today, there will be a fun shoot starting at 8 a.m. at the Mactan Benito Ebuen Air Base Firing Range.

This is open also to non-Peemayers. Entry fee has been pegged at P500. There will be three courses of fire and a total of 64 rounds will be needed to complete the competition.

There will be individual and team awards.

The 18-hole golf event is set tomorrow. The Blind Callaway handicapping system will be used. There will be prizes for the lowest gross and the lowest net for three handicap classes as well as the runner-up for each group.

The special awards will be for longest drive on hole number 1, nearest the pin on hole number 15 and longest putt on hole number 18.

Retired General Rodante Joya, general manager of MIGC, told us yesterday that the course is ready to host the event. In fact, MIGC is also supporting the fellowship activity all out.

Entry fee for the golf event, which is open to Peemayers and civilians is P1,000.

The awards ceremony will start at 4 p.m. tomorrow. The PMA Cebu Squad Inc. led by Ret. Col. Clarence Martinez and our president emeritus and squad leader Sr. Supt. Augusto Marquez, Jr., is expected to come in full force.

The event is a testimonial for Lt. Gen. Isagani Cachuela, commander of the Central Command.

It seems that MIGC continues to surprise many with the changes it has undergone for the past few years.

I had a chance to have a brief chat with Tita Vicky Moraza yesterday and she said that she was very surprised at how much the course has changed over the years.

There will be more changes coming said Gen. Joya and by November, he said, we shall see the new par-5 hole number 3 and the other changes that will follow with this change.

I think Mactan has set the standard for military courses around the country and this is another thing that we Cebuanos can be proud of.

I’m looking forward to the return of the annual Philippine Airlines Interclub to Cebu, which Gen. Joya is very eager to bid for this February in Cagayan de Oro City.
