Boljoon claims Cluster II-A crown in GUV Cup tourney
CEBU, Philippines - Four-time cluster champion Boljoon reasserted its mastery over familiar rivals to rule the women’s Cluster II-A in the 5th Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup last Sunday at the Boljoon Sports Complex.
The spirited Boljoon belles defended their throne via five-game sweep. They claimed
Oslob as their first victim, 25-11, 25-12 behind the exemplary performances of Roselle Hernane, Mitch Marzon, Merdiza Medalla, Irene Pepino and Rose Ann Deliña.
The gritty Boljoon stalwarts then trounced Santander, 25-7, 25-10 before routing Ginatilan, 28-26, 25-11.
Boljoon found Malabuyoc a tough costumer to handle but prevailed via a three-set thriller, 25-16, 18-25, 25-20. The Marjorie Perez-mentored Boljoon capped its campaign with a 25-16, 25-16 thrashing of Samboan, 25-16, 25-16.
“Even before the game started, we aimed of defending our cluster title and I’m glad that we were able to grab it again. I wasn’t expecting it because we fielded in new players. I would like to commend the fighting spirit that the girls have shown,” said Perez.
Perez said the exit of their former key players in Iste Sesante-Leopoldo, Girlie May Bequilla and the De la Cerna siblings Marife and Stella had caused the team to be back to scratch but to her surprise, she was not wrong in tapping another set of good players.
“I encouraged them to always observe the spirit of teamwork and instill discipline among themselves,” Perez added.
The 5th GUV Cup will have its next stop in Alegria this Saturday for the Cluster II-B battle featuring six teams in both men and women’s divisions. The overall winner in the women’s bracket will challenge Boljoon for the Cluster II championship. (FREEMAN NEWS)
