Lancers face Jaguars today

CEBU, Philippines - Eight-time champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers go up against the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJR) Jaguars tonight seeking for a win that will officially install them as the No.2 qualifier going into the quarterfinal round of the 9th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Jaguars, fresh from a hard-earned 79-73 victory over the DBTC Greywolves last Tuesday evening, could only settle at fourth place if they fall prey to the 5-1 Lancers. USJ-R’s chance of breaking into the top three vanished in thin air after it suffered an upset loss to the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers.

The University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors will most likely occupy the third spot in the event a triple-tie will occur between USC, USJ-R and Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras.

For two straight games against USPF and DBTC, the Jaguars are not really picking up and they were even threatened by the Greywolves had it not for the great efforts by Edwin Bibera and Kurt Amores.

The Greywolves stayed within striking distance most of the way and pulled within just three points, 65-68, on David James Cinco’s basket with still 3:18 left to play.

Bibera paced the Jaguars with 23 points, while Medget de la Rama and Amores netted 13 and 11 markers, respectively.

   Five Greywolves dished out double figures led by Celso Colegado Jr. with 16 points. They closed the elimination round with a pitiful 0-7 record.The scores
