Melanie Oudin’s success in the US Open Tennis Championships is something that will help encourage more parents to get their kids into sports.
The 17-year-old from Marietta, Georgia has reached the quarterfinals of the tournament with a string of tough, but nevertheless big wins.
She seems to enjoy the tournament so much and I sure hope to see more of her as it will be another testament to starting them young in sports.
Up next for her is 19-year-old Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, who is seeded 9th in the tournament.
Making it to the final eight is already a big leap forward for this young girl, who counts Russia’s Maria Sharapova among her victims.
Oudin is turning 18 years old this September 23 and was a former world junior number 2.
Her best ranking in the WTA is 67, but she is expected to break into the top 50 after the US Open.
With a height of 5 feet and six inches, her built is similar to some Filipino women, which means that with proper training and support we might see our own Melanie Oudin in the future.

My reliable source of early morning golf news and partner Wellington ‘Willy’ Lim sent me a text message yesterday about an ace scored by Apolinar ‘Inar’ Suarez of the Suarez Bros. fame on hole number 13 of Cebu Country Club.
Willy said that the ace was witnessed by Inar’s brother Felimon and Hernan Streegan.
The ace was made using a Honma Big LB-300cc Titanium head driver and a Nike No. 3 golf ball.
The hole, which is the longest par-3 of the club, played 191 yards long yesterday.

There was also another ace scored at CCC last September 1 by my good friend Frederic Chiongbian on hole No. 15.
I got word about it from the multiply site of CCC Jungolf.
Frederic, son of Ninong Albert Chiongbian, used a Titleist Pro V1X No. 3 ball and a Ping G5 17 degree hybrid.
The ace was witnessed by Jovi Neri along with Fred’s jungolf 1980s batchmates Toby Florendo, Eric Deen and Gabriel Yap, Jr.
