Ferrari victory

I had to watch the replay of the Belgian Grand Prix twice to savor the victory of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, who won the race over the weekend.

Watching it twice on replay last Monday was probably my way of making up after forgetting that there was a race last Sunday night due to the load of work that I had to deal with at the office. Yes, guys, I have the unenviable job that entails working on Sundays.

Raikkonen’s win was only the first for Ferrari this season and although Luca Badoer, the driver who replaced the injured Felipe Massa on the second car of Ferrari, did not really make a huge impact, I was just happy that he managed to finish the race at the tail-end of the 14 cars that were left running until the checkered flag.

The season might not look very bright for the red cars of Ferrari, but the win last weekend was proof that fans like me should not lose hope.

Even Giancarlo Fisichella of Force India made a statement finishing second after taking the pole position.

The season remains to be an exciting one although, I have to admit, I am not as happy as those years when the Ferraris were lording it over the field.

The Cebu Football Association held what was to be its first general assembly in so many years.

Although I am in no way connected with the CFA after I was not invited to the organization when it reorganized years ago, I have been kept updated by the goings on by friends, who are actively involved in the CFA affairs.

So, when I was asked by some people what I thought about the recent issues hounding the association, I told them that I am in no position to comment or say anything even if I did hear several sides of the issue.

I was once a director for the CFA when I was appointed such in the early 1990s by our former president Mario Ugarte.

When the CFA was reorganized, I learned only one day before their meeting that they were holding elections and I was rudely told that I could not even attend as I did not pay the membership fee, which I think was P100.

The past years have been great for Cebu football and I even had the chance to play again alongside guys who were ones the top players when we were much younger.

Looking back at the past few years and how football has become what it is today in Cebu, I hope that whatever problems that would be encountered would be solved for the good of the sport that we love.

When I was “kicked out” of the CFA, I did not take it against the new leadership then and continued in my own way to do my small share. I hope everyone else would do the same.

I’m sure there is much that we can all do for any sport and the leaders who have been picked to steer the association must also make sure that the good of the sports is placed as their top priority.

MILESTONES: Belated birthday greetings to two old friends – Abundia ‘Amy’ Gabutan-Encontro and Jose Ramon ‘Pitpit’ Mercado, who both turned a year older last Monday.

Belated greetings also go to my fellow former football parent and classmate Regina Encarnacion-Sitoy, who turned a year older yesterday.

Today’s greetings go to one of the men behind the popularity of running in Cebu – Dr. Potenciano ‘Yong’ Larrazabal III.
