WEKAF qualifying tourney today

-

CEBU, Philippines - The Philippines’ quest to redeem its championship glory continues as theWorld Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation (WEKAF) in Cebu will host the 2nd Qualifying Tournament today at Parkmall.

The Philippines, which last held the overall title in the early 90s, is keen on regaining its supremacy in the 2010 World Championship in Guadalajara, Mexico.

United States of America has reigned in the last four world championships.

WEKAF vice president Gerald O. Cañete said the event is an avenue for them to select world-class Cebuano fighters to represent the country in the Mexico joust.

“This tournament is designed for us to discover new talents and fighters. As soon as we will see them, we will train them. The fighters will be pooled for a selection process before the World Championship,” said Cañete in a press conference at YO.U in Parkmall.

“We, however, expect competitors from neighboring islands to give the Cebuanos stiff challenge,” he added.

Cañete said they are inviting clubs to join the tournament to boost RP’s chances of winning the overall crown.

The Atan Guardo, Gervince, Xkrim and Parkmall-backed tournament will start at 1 pm after a short opening ceremony. Sayaw or forms will start the competition, while fighters will have their hands full in the sparring competition.

The top performers will enjoy a leverage in joining the training pool, which will be based at the WEKAF Headquarters in Sto Niño Village, Banilad. – THE FREEMAN
