Green vs. Blue once more

Will Ateneo repeat or will La Salle clinch its second title in eight tries today. This is not the UAAP basketball tournament in Manila, but the 8th Ateneo-La Salle Golf Classic in Cebu that tees off today at the Cebu Country Club.

Ateneo won the title five times in a row before La Salle won its first one during the 6th edition of the event, but with numbers always on their side owing to the players from the Sacred Heart School-Jesuit, who are qualified to play for Ateneo, the Blue Eagles reclaimed the crown last year.

Today, La Salle is hoping to pull the rug from under the favored Ateneo side, but then there will always be surprises in this tournament that has become something that the alumni of both schools look forward to every year.

Even us, who are not graduates of De la Salle University, but once went to Andres Soriano Memorial School de la Salle in Toledo, are eager to take part in the event.

This year, there will only be a one-day event and players will be classified according to handicaps.

Entry fee for non-members of Cebu Country Club is P2,200, while club members will only be assessed P1,500.

The awards ceremony will be held tonight at Teatro Casino inside the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

If you happen to have spent at least two years in a La Salle Brothers or a Jesuit school, you are qualified to join the tournament.

I hope the weather would cooperate today. Tee off time starts at 7:30 a.m.

Augusta National, the famous home of the Masters, served the American troops during World War II.

I came across this information from Amazing But True Golf Facts.

It said that during the war, the golf course provided land for raising cattle and turkeys to feed the soldiers.

Who said that a golf course cannot be useful in times of national crisis?

I don’t hope to see this happen again someday though.

The opening of the men’s division in the Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup is something that many people have looked forward to.

The men felt they were being left out, but not anymore this year.

Although the organizers don’t expect all towns and cities to have a men’s team to go with their women’s squad, but the response, according to my sources, has been tremendous.

I know for a fact how volleyball is very big in the town of Minglanilla where I grew up playing in the annual summer league.

It is also big in Liloan and also in places like Naga and Carcar. This is really something to look forward to for the volleyball community of Cebu.
