All set for 14th CDU Run: Organizer hope to make it an international event someday
CEBU, Philippines - From being the first school-initiated running race in the Queen City of the South, the organizers of the Cebu Doctors’ University (CDU) Run contemplates on making it an international competition in the future.
The connection that Dr. Yong Larrazabal, the forerunner of the CDU Run, has slowly established while joining marathon events abroad makes the plan more plausible and achievable.
“Hopefully, this will not only be limited to Cebu. We plan to invite runners from all over the country and in the future, who knows, we can make it an international event,” said Larrazabal during the launching of the 4th University Run yesterday.
From its humble beginnings three years ago, the University Run grew better and bigger each year with thousands of runners taking part.
For this year’s edition scheduled to be held on August 23 at the CDU-Mandaue campus, at least 5,000 fitness buffs are expected to see action.
The likes of Senator Pia Cayetano, Dr. Larrazabal’s amiable wife Donna Cruz and her cousin Sunshine Cruz and husband Cesar Montano will be on hand to add glitz and glamour to the fun-filled activity.
“This is not compulsory to the students but we are giving service credits for those who are joining the race,” said Larrazabal.
Presented by Sun Cellular, the race features three race lengths - the 10K for the men and women’s open and the doctors class, the 5K for CDU students and employees, and the 3K for fun runners and students as well.
Cash prizes and medals will be given away to the top performers. Special awards will also be handed out to the youngest and oldest runners and the liveliest group.
A free phone kit is being pledged by Sun Cellular, but to whom will it be given is still being finalized.
Registration fee is pegged at P200 inclusive of a singlet and a Sun sim.
Since it serves as the kick-off activity of the CDU Week, a jamming session will take place right after the race.
Entry forms are available at CDU-Mandaue, Dr. Peter Mancao’s clinic at Cebu Doctors’ Hospital and at the Cebu City Sports Center. The deadline for registration is on August 19 for students and on August 22 for the rest of those who are interested to participate.—Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (THE FREEMAN)
