Freeman Cebu Sports

Leyte Golf

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiones -

I had a little trip down memory lane the other day thanks to The Freeman’s correspondent in Ormoc City, Obet Dejon, who sent me pictures of the Leyte Golf and Country Club.

I used to take trips to Ormoc to be at the course on the invitation of my now late good friend Mariano ‘Nonoy’ Tan.

It has been years since Nonoy passed away and since I last played the LGCC course.

I have very fond memories of the course and the hospitality of the people and the great food.

I told Obet that one day I’ll find time again to visit the place and head to the course and play.

Thanks for the pictures, it surely brought back a lot of wonderful memories and great times with Cebu friends, who’d hop into the fastcraft for a two-hour boat trip play 18 holes and head back home on the same day.

It used to be a cheaper option for those who want to play golf when the green fees of the courses in Cebu skyrocketed. That is not however the case now, but that doesn’t mean going to Ormoc to play is not anymore an option.

The 16th Business in Golf Tournament, which is part of the Cebu Business Month celebration, is set to tee off today at the Cebu Country Club.

This is one of the events lined up by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry to help spur the business community.

The tournament is a four-man team event with prizes at stake for the top three teams and the golfer of the year honors going to the CCCI member or alternate, who will score the most number of points.

This year’s chairman of the tournament is Jose Soberano.

There will also be prizes for the most accurate drive, nearest to the pin, longest drive and best in uniform.

The awards ceremony will be held at Teatro Casino inside the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

See you at the course and at the awards ceremony.

I took a side trip to Mactan a couple of days ago and met up with an old buddy, who is very active in water sports – John Kiener.

John showed me around the Mactan Island Aquarium, which is situated in his property in Maribago. The place features fishes and other creatures that you can find in our waters, but might never get a chance to see up close unless you dive.

There is also a place for divers that John is now working on and knowing this guy’s passion for the sea and the environment, this place will truly be something to look forward to.

MILESTONES: Happy birthday greetings go to my friends Asila Malasarte and Lissa Lawas, who both turn a year older today.

Belated happy birthday greetings go to my cousin Elouiza Sandalo and to my former student Leica Cruz, who both celebrated yesterday.

Welcome to Cebu to my squad leader, Lt. Col. Jose H. Narciso, who I bumped into yesterday. The same goes to my cousin Bon Benemerito and his family, who are here for a brief visit.

Bon voyage to my wife’s niece, Karen Reyes Barns, who is off to Hungary tomorrow after a visit to Cebu and her volunteer work in Romblon. -  THE FREEMAN
