PBA fines volatile Guiao P84,000
CEBU, Philippines - In an attempt to maintain order on the basketball court and avoid any untoward incident that may spoil beauty of the ongoing Motolite PBA Fiesta Conference semifinals series, PBA commissioner Renauld “Sonny” Barrios warned Burger King Yeng Guiao that he would be suspended the next time he loses his temper.
Guiao was slapped P73,600 for the technical foul he drew following his outburst late in Game 3 Sunday and Barrios fined an additional P10,000 for attempting to confront the referees in the hallway leading to their dugout after the game. That brings Guiao’s total fine to P83,600.
Sunday’s “T” was Guiao’s ninth this conference.
The league’s fines and penalties playing rules provide that fines stemming from technical fouls will be doubled when a player or team official has committed his sixth “T”.
The commissioner also issued the same warning to San Miguel Beer’s Wesley Gonzales and Burger King’s Beau Belga.
“The fans are filling our venues again mainly because we have two very interesting semifinal series. And the fans can rest assured that we will not allow the beauty of the series to be spoiled by unsportsmanlike conduct or any form of hooliganism,” Barrios said.
Gonzales was fined P1,000 for the technical foul he drew for pushing Burger King’s Mark Yee, who fouled him hard that opened a cut above his right eyebrow.
Barrios said review of the game tape showed the SMB guard attacked the Burger Kings rookie after a call has been made that should have merited a Flagrant Foul Penalty 1 so he slapped Gonzales with an additional P5,000 fine for a total of P6,000.
Yee, met the commissioner yesterday but Barrios withheld his punishment pending the review of his offense. If his action warrants a suspension, Barrios said, Yee will serve it on Game 5 on Friday. - PBA Media Bureau (THE FREEMAN)
