CEBU, Philippines – Defending CESAFI women’s volleyball champion University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) renews its rivalry with the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) at the resumption of the 2nd Mayor Ritchie Wagas Volleyball Cup today at the D.M. Reynes Gymnasium in Compostela.

The USPF Lady Panthers of Coach Jordan Paca will again rely on the tandem of Erika Camille Verano and Apple Saraum. USJ-R, on the other hand, will apply the defense taught them by Coach Grace Antigua, former skipper of the national volleyball team and a Cebu Sports Hall of Fame awardee.

It will be a hectic day for USPF as they will play Team Lilo-an later in the day.

Undefeated Southwestern University (SWU) of Coach Joerem Yu will try to secure their fourth straight victory at the expense of Team Housing in another game.

SWU will have the frontline of Danika Yolanda Gendrauli, Elizabeth Emnace, Lorie May Layno and rookie Anna Bennova Sabanal.

In other games, the University of San Carlos (USC) of Coach Roderick Arenasa will play Queenstown while Land Transportation Office (LTO) battles Team Lilo-an.

In a game featuring a generation of volleyball players, the USPF High School faces USJ-R Alumni.

The champion in this tournament will receive P15,000 while the second and third placers will get P10,000 and P5,000, respectively aside from trophies.

The tournament is one of the highlights of Compostela’s fiesta celebration (July 24-25) in honor of its beloved patron, Señor Santiago de Apostol. – THE FREEMAN
