Whatta day

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiones -

It has been some time since I wrote a column with the golf course view to inspire me. It reminds me that I am basically desk-bound in the paper. The sportswriter in me always pushes me to take those leaves from my desk job and spend time in the golf club for events and here I am now enjoying the great weather and the serene view of the veranda holes of Cebu Country Club.

I wish the course looked the same from here when I was playing several hours before I had a chance to sit down and do this column. Being on the course was both an enjoyable and at the same time excruciating experience.

Enjoyable because I was again taking part in the Y101 Corporate Cup for the third year in a row and hope to do so in the next many years as long as I can still play.

It was enjoyable because the wonderful people of Y101 were there.

Enjoyable because I was in very good company with Drs. Rey Dira and Joey Villarosa and my good friend Atty. Marlou Velasquez, who provided the much needed points for our team.

Enjoyable because no matter how bad you hit one shot, there is always one that would make you feel good about your game.

Enjoyable because the awards ceremony that is happening in an hour from this writing is going to be something great, according to Joseph Stevens, VP of Y101.

I can go on and on about how much the day went well that I forgot why I wrote the word excruciating a few paragraphs above. I believe it had something to do with the fact that I had to take pain relievers, but I’d rather not dwell on that.

It was another great tournament and the players are looking forward to next year’s event.

I’m sure Martha Tuason, the hard working CEO of Y101, is now working on that. I’m just happy to be given a chance to chip in some help to the event.

See you next year then.

My compadre Jack Huang of Abacus Securities reminded me yesterday about the arrival of the Ateneo Blue Eagles basketball team today for a short tournament in Cebu.

The team is due early this afternoon.

Jack is also reminding his fellow Ateneans to attend the Blue Night on Monday (June 8) at the Laguna Garden Café at 6:30 p.m.

Aside from the Blue Eagles, Ateneo de Manila University school president Fr. Ben Nebres, S.J. will also be attending.

The Blue Eagles will be playing against the CESAFI Selection, Pampanga Smart Buddies and the Cebu Landmaster in the tournament, which opens tomorrow and runs until the 11th.

Games will be played at the Cebu Coliseum starting at 4 p.m.

This is another chance for the Cebuano basketball fans to see a top notch team from Manila. Even if I am more Green (La Salle) than Blue (Ateneo), this is actually something that I hope you’d watch.
