Another ace

Jonathan Yu seemed to be in a very good mood yesterday when I arrived late for the tournament committee meeting of The View Invitational at the boardroom of Alta Vista Golf and Country Club.

Jonathan, shortly before heading to the meeting, scored his second hole-in-one on the 13th hole.

To make an ace official, there have to be two witnesses, but there was only Ben Villamor in his flight, but the groundskeeper, who was near the hole when the ace was made was very ecstatic, said Ben.

An ace is still an ace and I still vividly remember Jonathan narrating to me how he missed his first ace years ago on hole No. 5 of Cebu Country Club as he was very busy trying to pull out his tee when his flightmates and the caddies in the group burst into cheers.

Congratulations Jo and I hope you can make another one during The View Invitational.

I received the results of the annual club championships of Cebu Country Club yesterday and the youth really have stepped up. In the club championship, Charles Daniel Uy goes up against topseed Jovi Neri today in the quarterfinals while Bayani Garcia, the second seed, faces multi-titled Montito Garcia in another match.

It will be a battle of jungolfers in the lower half of the bracket of the two Garcias as Jovy Manglapus meets newly-crowned Junior Club champion LJ Go.

The lower half of the other bracket pits multi-champion Eric Deen against Mark Anthony Dy, who not so long ago was also a standout from the junior ranks.

I was happy and sad to see the results in class B where my compadre and most loyal golf buddy when I picked up the game more than a decade ago Michael Go won his match, 1-up.

It was sad at the same time as his opponent was my granduncle Nolan Rada of Petron, who Mike said made it a very long day for him at the golf course.

Mike faces Korean Kim Kwang Seok in the semifinals while the other semis battle features Nonoy Tirol and Nino Bascon, who has been tagged as the next mayor of San Remigio up north.

Milestones: Today’s a special one for the family as we celebrate the 59th birthday of a very loving woman, my mother, Erma Lebumfacil Quiñones.

Today also happens to be the birthday of my friends Mike Limpag, Emilio ‘Boljie’ Bolhano, and Adrienne Ong.

Belated greetings go to my mistah Edwin Batalla, who celebrated yesterday and also to Dr. Arthur ‘Turix’ Padilla, Jr., who despite being in the United States is always willing to help out when I get sick.

Last Monday was the big day of my good old friend Johnny ‘The Bikini’ Kiener, one of those who made my early days as a sportswriter a lot of fun.

More power to all of you!
