Yeo tops UP golf tourney

- Nimrod NL Quiñones -

CEBU, Philippines – Alexandre Yeo fired nines of 37 and 40 last Friday for a total score of 77 strokes to win the lowest gross honors in the 1st UPCC High School Batch ’84 Inc. Fun Golf Tournament played at the Mactan Island Golf Club.

Yeo shared the limelight with Japanese C. Sugimoto, who sprayed three birdies around the par-72 course en route to a net score of three-under-par 69 in the System-36 handicapping format to win the lowest net plum.

The class A title went to Pedrito Buenavista with a net score of 71 strokes off a gross 82. He won the title by virtue of a lower System-36 handicap over Boy Alegre, who also finished with a net 71, but established a handicap of 12.

In this handicapping format, each player is given a handicap of 36 at the start of the round. The player earns corresponding points after each hole is played – two for par or better, one for bogey, and zero for a double-bogey or worse.

At the end of the round, all points earned will be deducted from the original handicap of 36 to determine the player’s System-36 handicap for the round.

The class B title went to Maj. Jeffrey Jake Gallenero, who was also the tournament chairman. He scored a net 71 and established a System-36 handicap of 13 to win the plum.

Runner-up honors for class B went to Junrey Pelayo, who made a net 71 and established a handicap of 14.

The class C title went to Lt. Col. Joey Reyes with a net score of 70 while runner-up honors went to Retired Coast Guard Capt. Leon Oribello with a net score of 73.

The ladies plum went to Rachel Burlas with a net score of 69 while Vergie Lou Hwang was the runner-up with a net 72.

Ace Acas ruled the Junior Golf division scoring a net 74 off a gross score of 95 while runner-up honors went to Caryle Joy Cubos with a net score of 80.

Special awards went to Sugimoto for most birdies with 3, Yeo for most pars with 13 and Alegre for most bogeys with 8.

Zen Pastoriza had the longest drive on hole No. 1 landing 96 yards before the green while Edwin Morales, who sank a 45-footer on the 18th hole had the longest putt.

Nearest the pin on hole No. 15 was John Lee, whose tee shot land 2.5 feet away while Burlas had the most accurate drive on hole No. 1 landing 1.5 feet away from the center line. –THE FREEMAN
