Seno is Cebu's first finalist
CEBU, Philippines - John Godfrey Seno is the first Cebuano to book a championship ticket in the 14th Gullas Cup Tennis Tournament yesterday at Cebu Country Club. The Bogo-native Seno easily dismantled Clyde Dujale, 6-2, 6-1 to match into the unisex 10-under final.
Seno, thus, arranged a gold medal match against Alexie Santos of Palawan, who toppled Arthur Pantino, 6-3,6-0.
Still at the CCC, Christopher Encarnacion motored into the boys 12-under quarterfinals, while Fritz Satera reached the semifinal phase of the 14-under alongside Kurt Gerapusco, Alexis Ondoy and Mark Enriquez.
The highly fancied Niño Siso, on the other hand, barged into boys 16 and 18-under quarterfinals without hitting a ball as his opponents were both a no-show.
Over at the Baseline Tennis Center, Niño’s sisters Sallydine and Sallymae likewise barged into the semifinals in their respective age brackets. Sallymae actually grabbed two semis spots in the 16 and 18-under, while Sallydine got hers in the 18-under.
Sallymae humiliated Mary Christine Bellita, 6-0, 6-1 to earn a penultimate round clash with Zamboanga’s Nina Ladera in the 16-under today. Ladera advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 whipping of Jessica Lagman, 6-2 , 6-1.
The other girls 16-under semis duel pits Hannah Espinosa against Cindy Gerapusco. Espinosa went through a three-set thriller before eliminating Janice Cañete, while Gerapusco slammed Ciaralyn Tuñacao in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
In the girls 18-under class, Sallydine takes on Ana Bienes next, while Sallymae faces off with Gerapusco.
Sallydine dumped Cara Abadia, 6-0, 6-1, while Sallydine silenced Lucel Goc-ong, 6-0, 6-0.
Bienes, for her part, outsmarted Cheska Tabotabo, 6-4, 6-2 and Gerapusco scored a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Mary Toledo.
After reaching the 16-under semis, Hannah Espinosa moved one step away from the girls 14-under final after shutting down Tuñacao, 6-0, 6-0.
Next in Espinosa's order of battle is Elma Dacian, who terminated Maureen Adlawan, 6-0, 6-2.
The other final berth in the girls 14-under will be disputed by Irish Balverde and Crissianne Issa Kintanar. - THE FREEMAN
