Shell '78/85 mauls '82/83
CEBU, Philippines - Hardcourt terminator Chester C. Cokaliong bombarded 15 of his 26 points in the final quarter as Shell ’78/85 snapped out of its two-game skid with a 94-78 demolition of Chester Enterprises ’82/83 in the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association’s 11th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup on Thursday night at the City Sports Club-Cebu gym.
Class ’78/85 enjoyed as much as 17 points lead on several occasions, the last one was at 46-29 at halftime.
Behind the hot hands of Cesar Ting, Class ’82/83 rallied back with aplomb to pull within five points, 61-56, but Cokaliong, Edvin Kaw and Wilson Yu came to the rescue and restored the Shell-backed squad’s double-digit edge, 77-66.
Class ’82/83 threatened for the last time at 74-81 as the red-hot Cokaliong knocked in three successive 3-pointers during a 13-4 rally underneath the final two-minute mark of the contest to catapult Class ’78/85 to a 16-point blowout.
Cokaliong, who shot 8-of-18 from the beyond the arc, shared the game MVP honors with Edvin Kaw, who finished with 20 points, six assists, five rebounds and two blocks. Yu chipped in 14 points, 10 rebounds and three assists, while the ever explosive Joel Chan submitted his fourth triple-double of the season with 12 points, 18 assists and 15 rebounds as Class ’78/85 stayed on top of Division I with a 12-2 win-loss card.
The other bright spot for Shell ’78/85 was Joselito Lee, who dished out season-highs 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Ting unloaded a season-high 24 points on top of four rebounds and two assists, while Edwin Lim fired 23 points, five rebounds and five assists but their joint efforts went for naught as Class ’82/83 slumped to 3-10.
In the other game, Edwin Ong and Archier Bejer each had 15 points as Gregoria’s Curtains and Trim Haus ’89/93 wachked Schick Razor ’84/92, 56-53, for its only second win in 14 games. Class ’84/92 fell to 3-10.
