Good news via text

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiones -

The short messaging service of phone companies has definitely made it easier to get in touch with one another and pass on the good news.

The past few days, I received two text messages of sporting triumph of Cebu athletes in places far from Cebu.

The first text message came from the very respected and well-loved Edward Hayco, the director of Team Cebu City DanceSport.

Ed told me that Team Cebu City bagged 24 gold medals in their first leg at the Emerald Ball US Open. This event, he said, is one of the three biggest competitions in the United States where 2,000 dance athletes from all over the world converge.

He said that the team is set to join two more major events in the US set in Atlanta and New York.

On the local scene, the Cebu City dancesport athletes also swept the gold medals in the just-concluded Palarong Pambansa in Tacloban.

One reason for this success is the untiring support that Ed has given the athletes and the sport and the free workshops that are being held in the barangays of Cebu City.

The other text message I got came from coach Glenn Ramos of Don Bosco Technology Center informing me that the Under-10 and Under-14 teams that he brought with him to Baguio City for the Victory Cup have won their divisions.

I sure hope to get a lot more of these messages in the future even when I am not feeling well because they surely make me smile when I read them.

The 9th National Interclub Football Cup, which is organized by the Cebu Amateur Football Club, will kick-off this weekend.

The even will start on Saturday and will run until the 17th of the month.

The formal opening ceremony is however set this Sunday, May 10, at the University of San Carlos-Talamban Campus field at 1 p.m.

Games will be played at USC-TC, the San Roque Parish field, and the Springdale Football Field.

There are five teams in the 38 and above category, six for the men’s open and also participants in the U-17, U-14, U-12 and U-10 categories.

See you at the football fields starting this weekend for this annual summer event that the CAFC has always been very happy to bring to Cebu.

There are teams from out of town that are taking part in the 11-a-side tournament.

I just got word from my mistah Maj. Jeffrey Jake Gallenero that the tournament organized by their high school class at UP Cebu is backed by Gov. Gwen Garcia, her brother Rep. Pablo John Garcia, Pagcor, Panasonic, and Smart Communications.

Rep. Pablo John is a graduate of class ’84.

Their golf tournament is set on May 15 at Mactan Island Golf Club. Tickets are at P2,000 each.

I already have the commitment of several alumni like Mariosol Pasion, Evans Tumaliwan, Atty. Olin Seno, Gilbert Suribas, Rodin Mangubat, Councilor Dave Karamihan, and Ira Kiener that they’re joining.

I’m calling on the others to also join including the non-UP High School alumni.

MILESTONES: Happy birthday to our nephew Julius R. Ybarita, who turns a year older today. The same goes to Rex Crystal and Duchess Veloso.

In tomorrow’s list of birthday celebrants are my little sis Marsante G. Alison, Jen Vega of the Lifestyle Section, Parklane’s Emilie Florita, my former UP judo teammate Jean Marie Ogali, and Mandaue City Administrator Briccio Joseph Boholst.
