Interclub bootfest

-

The stinging heat reminds us that what we call summer in our country is here. Although it is a misnomer since we only have the wet and dry season, we have called the period from late March until end of May as summer.

Some summer sports clinics have already started while most are set to open this Monday right after Easter.

Summer is also a time when harried parents would have to shuttle from one venue to another bringing their kids to different activities so they can make the most of the time off from school.

One thing that I look forward to during these very hot days is the National Interclub Football Cup organized by the Cebu Amateur Football Club. Next month, the tournament will be holding its ninth season.

This is actually one of the biggest football events in Cebu with teams from other parts of the country coming over to participate in the week-long event.

My teammate Greg Balsicas III sent me email a couple of weeks ago to inform me about the event.

Greg is one of the most dependable defenders of our team Queen City United, who helped keep me off from trouble as the goalkeeper during those times when I was still actively taking part in tournaments.

My fervent wish is to have the chance to play again and since I have let go of my gear when I was diagnosed to have a disc herniation (L-4), one day I might have to get new goalkeeper's gloves and soccer shoes and be with the other members of the CAFC, who have shown their love for the game through this annual event.

Glenn Quisido is the president of the CAFC and I'm sure he'd be happy to get more support for the tournament so don't hesitate to offer help if you can.

The competition will be for the men's open, men's 38 above, boys and girls 17, boys and girls 14 and mixed 10 divisions.

The numbers indicate the age of the participants.

We will keep you posted about the event set to start around mid-May.

There are also two more events set this month that I have committed to support - the 9th Island Tee of Mactan Island Golf Club on April 23 to 26 and the fund raising golf event of UP Cebu High School Batch '84 on the 30th.

Both events will be held at MIGC.

Then there is also the softball tournament that Jesse Bernad is organizing at the Aboitiz Field in Subangdaku, Mandaue City.

There really are so many events to be at. One very important thing we should not forget is to bring sunblock and not forget to apply it.

MILESTONES: I would like to congratulate the members of Sambisig class 1991 of the Philippine Military Academy, who recently got promoted to the rank of Lt. Col. In the Philippine Army.

I'd like to name all but I'll start with the mistahs in Cebu like Lt. Col. Armand Arevalo of Centcom and Lt. Col. Oliver Maquiling of the ATG. Another member of class '91 based in Cebu who got promoted is Lt. Col. Alex Rillera, the commanding officer of the 3ATG based in Camp Lapu-lapu.

Other notables are Lt. Cols. Ignatius 'Bong' Patrimonio, Norman 'Nonoy' Zuniega, Rodrigo Sosmeña, Leandro Abeleda III, Eduardo 'Baygubs' Gubat, Richard Ruffy, Moises Nayve, Cebuanos Stephen Fernan and Ted Dumosmog, and my squadmate Ariel Mabborang.

Congratulations mistahs and more power!   (THE FREEMAN)
