CEBU, Philippines - The fourth book of eskrima authored by the ageless 89-year old Grandmaster Ciriaco “Cacoy” Cañete will formally be launched at noon today at the Diamond Lane 2 function room of the posh Parklane International Hotel.
The book, entitled Eskrima-Arnis Techniques, is already out in the market and copies of which are being sold at the local bookstores.
The book contains 150 pages and at least 900 photographs and illustrations so it will be better understood by the readers especially those who are interested in this indigenous Filipino form of martial arts the world-renowned Cañete family has nurtured since 1932.
The three other books of Cañete are The Fastest Olisi Fighter, Pangamot (barehand), and Eskrido, a combination of eskrima and judo. One of the three books was authored by June Cañizares.
Cañete will be marketing most of his books abroad to cater to his eskrima discliples in the United States, Europe and Australia.
Cañete also plans to talk with the president of the different colleges and universities in Cebu for his book to be used as a reference/instructional material in the Physical Education (P.E.) subject because eskrima can be useful especially in Crimonology being a form of self-defense.
At the moment, Cañete is busy cooking up a bigger event which is the World Eskrima Tournament on April 24-26 at the City Sports Club-Cebu.
At least 100 arnisadors from 10 nations are expected to join the three-day contest. Among the prominent names set to see action are Grandmaster Vince Palumbo of Australia, GMs Richard Bustillo and Anthony Clemans of the United States and Indonesia-based American national Glenn Gardiner.
After the world tilt, Cañete will be leaving for the US to conduct his annual seminar and demonstration in different places there. He will be back by the end of the year for the Doce Pares World Federation election where he is honored as president-for-life. (GGM) (THE FREEMAN)
