Ramirez endorses Fr. Uy as next PSC chairman

CEBU - If he has his way, Philippines Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William “Butch” Ramirez wants commissioner Fr. Vicente “Vic” L. Uy, SVD as his successor. Ramirez has already tendered his resignation, but had been advised to stay put on his post.

After the Beijing Olympics, Ramirez contemplates on going back to his hometown in Davao and look into sports development into a micro level.

Ramirez has also considered going into politics or if not as under-secretary of the Department of Education that will specifically handle the school sports program.

The longest serving chairman of the PSC is currently in Cebu to grace the Asean School Sports Council. He is not from the education department, but he is very welcomed by the rest of the ASSC members.

It may sound ironic, but that’s the way it is and Ramirez is just doing what he ought to do in whatever way he can.

“If I’d be an under-secretary, I can share my expertise in sports and if they see I’m doing something good, I believe they will give support. Ipakita sa nato daan nga naa tay agi,” Ramirez said during yesterday’s press conference at the Cebu Midtown Hotel.

If not, Ramirez has the Philippine Sports Institute to take care of.The PSI is set to be launched on December in Manila.

Now he’s on his way out, Ramirez openly express that he wants to pass the PSC baton of leadership to no less that Fr .Uy.

Ramirez said that based on the performance of the former athletic director of the University of San Carlos and executive director of the PSC, Fr. Uy is the most qualified to take the reins of the country’s highest sports governing body.

Fr. Uy, who was present in the presscon, could only shake his head and smile to the sportswriters.

It’s only been two months since he was installed as PSC commissioner and now his name had been floated to replace Ramirez.

Pressed for comment, Fr.Uy said he is not thinking about it now and will make decisions only when it finally happens. – Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (THE FREEMAN)
