New PSC commissioner to focus on Visayas area

- Marigold Lebumfacil -

CEBU - Newly-appointed Philippine Sports Commissioner Fr. Vic Uy will be focusing his attention on the Visayas, which was the tasked given to him by the sports governing body.

Fr. Uy said that his assigned area of concern includes the provinces of Samar, Leyte, Bohol and Cebu. This was learned during the board meeting the last Tuesday.

“It was my first time to attend the board meeting yesterday as a PSC commissioner and I was told to focus on the sports programs of the different provinces assigned to me,” Fr. Uy told The FREEMAN in a phone interview.

“I will take over on the sports assigned to Commissioner Richie (Garcia). And I will carry out the tasks given to me by the office,” Fr. Uy added.

Uy stressed out that all the tasks and programs that he will do to the different areas assigned to him will be in line with the sports programs of PSC.

“I feel honored at the same time humbled to have the position. I am challenged to continue to work very hard for the development and improvement of the Philippine sports and our athletes,” Fr. Uy said.

The former VP for Finance of the University of San Carlos and the former PSC regional head and PRISAA president, Fr. Uy, is encouraging the Cebuano athletes to excel in their respective events to get a crack at joining the national team and represent the country in the different international events.

“I hope that there will be more Cebuano athletes, who could enter the national squad. But they should have to work hard for it. I am not saying that since I am a commissioner already, I could handpick athletes from Cebu. They had to pass through a series of requirements first before they could enter the team. That’s why I am encouraging them to really work hard and excel in their respective sports,” Uy said.

For the meantime, aside from being a commissioner, Fr. Uy will also at the same time the PSC executive director, since no one had replaced him in that position yet.

He has served the commission for more than a year now as executive director, buried underneath piles of paperwork.

Superiors saw his dedication and that’s why he was nominated as one of the candidates for commissionership, where he went up against all odds—facing candidates backed by prominent and powerful politicians. (THE FREEMAN)
