USJ-R, USC-NC lead inter school tournex

CEBU – The University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) and the University of San Carlos-NC book their first win in the 1st Metro Cebu Inter-School Basketball Challenge that opened yesterday at the Don Bosco Technology Center in Labangon.

USJ-R trounced the Philippine Christian Gospel School 49-41 while USC-NC beat the Mary Help of Christian School 32-23 to lead the midget division.

In the lone mini division game available as of press time yesterday, Cebu Eastern College edged USJ-R 33-29.

Vice Mayor Mike Rama, a noted basketball enthusiast himself, opened the tournament yesterday.

The tournament caters to younger players in the mini and midget categories, or elementary age level.

“The 1st Metro Cebu Inter-School Basketball Challenge tourney was organized in order to have sports program for the basketball players of the future. So far, most of the basketball leagues in the city only cater to high school and collegiate divisions. So, we come up to another league that would showcase the elementary students from the different schools in Cebu. In this manner, we will be able to boost their skills and talents in the said sport,” said Andoyo, the event director.

Aside from USJ-R and USC-NC, six other teams are playing in the midget division, namely, Sacred Heart School-Jesuit (SHS-J), Mary Help of Christian School (MHCS) in Minglanilla, Monterey School in Talisay, Philippine Christian Gospel School (PCGS), Southwestern University (SWU) and Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC).

The mini division boasts of USC-NC, USJ-R, SHS-J, SWU, DBTC and Cebu Eastern College (CEC).

Team World manages the tournament with DBTC Administrator and Rector Fr. Lan Guiao, Boy Andoyo (event director), Harry Lim and Rey Villagracia (tournament commissioners) and Rey Cañete of BAP-SBP.
