Archers vs. Eagles

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

The storied rivalry between the De la Salle Green Archers and the Ateneo Blue Eagles would once again take center stage and would probably allow us some breather from our daily dose of news about economic woes, bad politicians, and terrorists sowing terror.

I would have wanted to say that it would spare us from the bad news, but if your team is the loser, then that is still bad news.

This will be the fourth meeting of the two teams in the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) finals. Ateneo has a 2-1 edge over La Salle winning it in 1998 and 2002 while La Salle won it in 2001.

If you plan to go to Manila on Sunday and watch the game, be prepared to shell out lots of money to the scalpers. I heard that the tickets were sold out in three hours.

Those who are in Cebu might want to gather for game 1 at 4 p.m. on Sunday, I gathered from the One La Salle egroup, which is belong to (oops I just gave away the colors that I will wear), something is being set up at Hamabar at the City Sports Club Cebu.

I’ll fill you in on the details when I confirm everything, but this should be a fun place to be if you’d like to be part of the action as the Green Archers and Blue Eagles cheer for their squads.

I heard Balamban Councilor Dave Karamihan is preparing the drums that the Green Archers will be using. If you happen to hear somebody cheering “go La Salle…” at the Transcentral Highway, that’s probably Dave just getting his vocal chords ready while shuttling between Cebu City and Balamban.

I was at the Cebu Coliseum last Saturday to witness part of the CESAFI All-Stars.

Some sections were packed, but one thing that I did not really see was the school spirit that the Manila colleges and universities display in the UAAP and NCAA.

In Cebu, we don’t get the same audience to watch the games, but I am hoping that someday that would also happen here.

There have been very good efforts in the past like when the home and away format was introduced by Sir Dodong Gullas in 1999 that brought back the interest of the students.

If they can do it in Manila, there is no reason we can’t in Cebu.

Super Bobby Nalzaro of radio station dySS and GMA-7 Cebu’s Balitang Bisdak forwarded to me a text message from his cousin Noel Nalzaro of PNB Cagayan de Oro.

It is an invitation to take part in the 1st Mayor Tinnex Jaraula Golf Cup on October 2 to 5 at the Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club.

This 36-hole event is a project of the CDO Chamber of Commerce. The Modified Stableford Scoring System will be used.

There will be hole-in-one prizes for all par-3 holes. The prizes include P 1 million, a motorcycle, and a laptop.

Cagayan de Oro is just a short hop away by plane and overnight by boat, which makes it very easy for us from Cebu to make it there.

Belated birthday greetings to one of my big brothers, Vicente ‘Inting’ Go, who celebrated yesterday.
