UC and UV retain titles
CEBU – The University of Cebu and the University of the Visayas retained their respective titles at the close of the 13th Milo Little Olympics yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.
Although already assured of the crown in the secondary division even before the last day of competition, the UC Webmasters did not stop from collecting more medals to end their campaign with 34 golds,20 silvers and 11 bronzes.
In the elementary division, UV zoomed zoomed to top from out of nowhere with 12 golds, six silvers and 10 bronzes.
UC’s secondary chess squad contributed a gold via the boys’ team competition. Claire Panaginip handed another gold in the featherweight division of taekwondo.
The Webmasters also bagged four more golds in badminton and table tennis.
Majority of UC’s golds came from athletics, table tennis and swimming behind the efforts of Paula Abigail Vega.
The University of San Carlos trailed UC with 11-2-6 gold-silver-bronze medal tally followed by Abellana National School with 10-14-11 medal haul.
UV-Main got the fourth with 9-3-3, while the University of Southern Philippines Foundation grabbed the fifth spot with a 7-12-9 taly.
The other action in the multi-sport event saw Cebu Institute of Technology dominating the scrabble event, Abellana National School rulung sepak takraw, taekwondo and girls volleyball and the University of Southern Philippines reigning supreme ib boys volleyball.
Cebu International School and Don Bosco College shone in football event.
In the elementary division, all contenders for the overall title have to wait for several hours before knowing who is who in their level.
It needed the result of gymnastics competition to determine the top winner. In the end, it was the UV bets who had the last laugh.
Although the Visayanians failed to sweep the golds at stake in gymnastics, they managed to hang on and block Silliman University ‘s way up.
All of UV’s medals except a single bronze from taekwondo came from gymnastics.
Silliman University finished second with just a one gold deficit from UV. SU collected 11 golds, three silvers and 11 bronzes, while early front-runner placed third with six gold, seven silver and five bronze medals.
The two-weekend action has San Nicolas ES as the top school in athletics, Banilad Elementary School-Mandaue in badminton and lawn tennis.
Paref-Springdale in football, Inayawan in sipa, Lahug in scrabble, Severo Duterte in table tennis, and Pardo in volleyball. – THE FREEMAN
