Golfing with Malaysian friends

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

CEBU - In my line of work there is no such thing as a holiday or even a calamity as we have to come to the office to make sure that you would be holding your copy of The FREEMAN even before you have breakfast in the morning.

Is it a tough job? Not really. I’d say it is enjoyable as we get to meet all sorts of people.

While I may be most often desk bound due to my duties as managing editor of this paper, I often find myself with an opportunity to go out and cover events most especially sports.

Yesterday, I did not just get a chance to cover, but had a chance to play in the Philippines-Malaysia Fellowship Golf Tournament at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club.

We had over 20 guests from the Sabah Golf Association, who were all fine fellows and have extended to us an invitation to visit their place for a similar event.

Why not?

Here are the winners of yesterday’s tournament:

It was a sweep for the Filipinos in the battle for low gross honors. Loloy Sabuga placed first shooting four-over-par 76 strokes. Alex Yeo finished second with his 79 strokes edging Rolando Alberto in the countback. Alberto took third place honors.

In the low net battle, Mario Caballes, who I recently have been meeting at Armscor and not at the golf course, won the title with his 66 strokes after edging Malaysia’s James Ibrahim in the countback.

Ibrahim finished second while third place went to Vicente ‘Inting’ Go with a net score of 69.

Arthur Kong had the best gross among the Malaysians with 83 strokes while the best net was logged by Peter Chung.

Although I am not used to teeing off quite late in the morning, the weather yesterday was great and we showed our new-found Malaysian friends the beauty of Cebu from the fairways and greens of Alta Vista.

They also saw the beauty of Bohol from afar as the course offers you a great view that would compensate any bad game. I’m beginning to sound like I played bad. Well, I have to admit, I did.

In a little over two weeks, we’re going to witness the Sportswriters Association of Cebu (SAC)-Hapee Sports Quiz at the Ayala Center Cebu.

The event is also backed by Richmedia, whose digital billboards around Ayala Center Cebu and the various ports in the Visayas are now displaying some of the sports trivia that would be featured in the contest.

This is open exclusively to high school students and we are limiting the participants to only 30.

If you want to be part of this event and get a chance to win an Asus EEE PC, better sign up now.

MILESTONES: I’d like to wish two good friends belated happy birthday as they both turned another chapter of their lives yesterday. They are Sergio ‘Boy’ Gonzales (now I know where the Sergio comes from) and Simonette Serra- Guanzon.

Belated happy birthday greetings also go to Asuncion Astor-Aluben.

More power to all of you!
