We’re not crazy, we’re just golfers

FULL POINT - Nimrod Quiñones -

I love the rain.  I love it so much that I decided to spend two hours or so soaking wet in the downpour yesterday morning in the company of my relatives, who are also golfers or should I say golf nuts.

To the uninitiated, seeing men allowing themselves to be soaked in the rain while trying to hit a golf ball may seem something that can qualify these people as lunatics.  But, to the golfers, a little rain doesn’t hurt.

Well you could end up with colds or fever, but that’s still better than being called chicken.

The second round of the 2nd Y101 Corporate Cup was cancelled after storm Frank dumped rains that made playing close to impossible.  There were several flights that actually finished the 18 holes while mine, which included my cousins Patrick Evans King and Rolando Acas, stopped after nine holes.

We were on our way to the green of the 9th hole when we were told that the organizers have decided to cancel yesterday’s action.

Oh well, it was a good way to take a shower though, but we had to head to the locker room, because despite the many giveaways that radio station Y101-FM gave to the players, they did not include soap and shampoo that we could use on the fairways hehehe.

David Chan, the hard working chairman of the Business in Golf Tournament and husband of this year’s Cebu Business Month chairperson Tess, called me up yesterday about the event set next week.

Happening this Tuesday at the Cebu Country Club is the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry-PLDT 15th Business in Golf Tournament.

This is a four-man team event where everyone’s score will count in the Modified Stableford Scoring System.

The lowest handicap of the player as of June 1 will be used and mulligans will be sold at P200, which would entitle a player to one extra shot per nine holes.

There will be prizes for the overall individual champion, the top three teams, best in uniform and the ‘Golfer of the Year’ award, which goes to the chamber member or his company registered alternate with the best score.

‘David told me that the awards ceremony will be held at the Teatro Casino inside the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

As of yesterday, there are already 45 teams confirmed to join the tournament, but they can accommodate as many as 55.  Those who are interested to join can contact Joy Segismar at 2321421 local 110 or 111.

As I have written many times this month, there are several big tournaments in Cebu for June until early July including the BiG and there’s no pun intended there.

It has been two weeks since the 1st Amo Cup, but it always feels good when you get a pat on the back for the effort of your group to make it happen.

While we were going over the scores of the 2nd Y101 Corporate Cup yesterday morning, Dr. Albert Solis told me that the Amo Cup was truly a huge success.

It was the effort of the Fil-Chinese tournament committee AKA as the Mga Anak Ni Amo that put the event together in honor of the late Albino D. Gothong, who was a major golf patron of Cebu.

MILESTONES: Congratulations to the newly-promoted Sr. Supt. Louie Oppus, chief of the Lapu-Lapu City Police.

I also like to wish Dr. Mary Louise Janet Tadlip-Alforque, who is turning a year older on Monday, an advanced happy birthday.

More power!
