Lim-Go tandem fires net 54 to pace President’s Cup golf; Japanese player aces hole no. 15 to win a car

- Nimrod NL Quiñones -

The combination of big guns Wellington Lim and Arturo Go fired a gross score of five-under-par 65 strokes yesterday and finished with a net 54 to set the pace in the 10th President’s Cup at the Cebu Country Club.

The outstanding effort of the tandem capped yesterday’s first round of the two-day event, an ace by Koji Hosogaya was the highlight of the tournament.

Hosogaya scored a hole-in-one on the 165-yard no. 15 using a Mizuno X901 six-iron and a Titleist NXT No. 2 ball.

His feat was witnessed by partner Chiaki Endo and their flightmates Hisato Isobe and Iikichi Mizutani.  Sources said that the ace won Hosogaya a Suzuki Swift car.

In case another player will score a hole-in-one today, he will have to share the prize with Hosogaya.

There are actually two teams tied for the lead in the premiere division based on the early results that we furnished to The FREEMAN as Andrew Si and Rolly Tan also finished with a net 54.

Lim and Go’s superb effort featured six birdies scattered on the 5th, 6th, 8th, 11th, 13th, and 15th and a solitary bogey on the 9th, which was the only blemish in what could have been an immaculate scorecard.

The two have a combined handicap of 13 strokes, which was computed by adding the individual handicaps then dividing the sum by two before multiplying it by 75 percent.

Si and Tan finished with a gross 74 and their combined handicap is 20.

The first day of the event was a two-man scramble where each player played a ball and after each shot is made the team picks which is the better of the two and they would hit from there.

Today, the format would be a two-man alternate shot.  This format calls for both players to hit a tee shot and then after they pick which is the better of the two drives, the player whose shot was not picked would hit the ball.  The tandem would then hit alternately until they hole out.

Results for the other divisions were still being computed as off press time early last night.

The President’s Cup is held in honor of Douglas LuYm, the president of the club.

Cebu Country Club has a par-72 layout that is lined by old trees and features a relatively flat layout with a few water hazards scattered around the course.

A total of 89 teams are seeing action in the tournament.  There are a total of three categories, which are determined by dividing the total number of entries by three based on the first day scores.
