Good news for jungolf

FULL POINT - Nimrod Quiñones -

Dennis Rodman and Charles Barkley are back.

Sorry, not back as players, but back in the headlines with personal problems.

Rodman, who was called “The Worm,” is in the news for a hotel incident involving him and his girlfriend, while Sir Charles has some gambling debts that need to be paid.

Oh well, gone are the heydays of these two former NBA stars, who incidentally we’re known for their rebounding skills and hustle on the court.  Off the court, they’re also known for some other things, but at least Sir Charles never dared to wear a wedding gown and looked like an alien from planet XYZ who got left by the bridal spaceship that would take him to the black hole hotel for his honeymoon.

I had a chance to talk with Retired General Rodante Joya the other night during the dinner hosted by new Philippine Army Chief Lt. Gen. Victor Ibrado at Central Command.

Gen. Joya, who is often called General Joy by friends has somehow really earned such nickname, because he knows how to bring joy to others.

We talked about the offer of the Mactan Island Golf Club, which he manages, to the junior golf community of Cebu.

He said that the club, which is the only public golf course in Cebu, is very willing to support the development of golf for kids.  “Tell us what you want,” Gen. Joya said.

Things can only get better for the junior golfers of Cebu with support like this from a club that shows how much it is willing to accommodate the future stars.

Registration for the 1st Albino D. Gothong Memorial Golf Tournament dubbed as the “Amo Cup” is now ongoing.

You can sign up with the registration counter at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club for the event set on June 5 and 6 and pay the entry fee of P3,000.

There are limited slots available so it is best that you sign up early to be assured of a chance to play in the 18-hole event.

The non-members of the host club can still sign up there since we have a specified number of slots for each club.

Unfortunately, payments have to be made or chits have to be signed (for members) before we can accept any registration.

Giveaways are an Adidas locker bag, a Prada vest and an Ashworth shirt.  There will also be other giveaways like products from Profoods, AD Gothong Manufacturing Inc., and Suarez Bros.

The much-talked about basketball series between officers of the Armed Forces and the Recoletos priests is going to have a game 4.

I saw no less than Lt. Gen. Alexander Yano with his mistah Lt. Gen. Ibrado discussing the schedule with Fr. Constatino Real, the father superior of the Order of Agustinian Recollects.

I‘m not sure of the details, but there were some who said that after three straight losses to the priests, the officers of the AFP are proposing that they play in Fort Bonifacio where Gen. Ibrado is now based.

The good general is however hopeful that their best-of-three series, which eventually became a best-of-five and then a best-of-seven would have the officers ending the streak of the priests before it becomes a best-of-15 match.

This shall help all of them stay fit.

MILESTONE: Belated happy birthday to The Freeman sportswriter Marigold Lebumfacil, who turned a year older yesterday.  She also happens to be my niece.

More power!
