10TH CECABA SEASON: Chester ‘82/83, Henkel ‘95 rule
Chester Enterprises ’82/83 and Henkel Philippines ’95 consummated a two-game sweep over their respective rivals to emerge as division champions in the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball’s 10th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Cup last Sunday at the City Sports Club-Cebu Gym.
Stephen Tan and Edwin Lim each had 16 points as Class ’82/83 repeated its mastery over Young Builders ’91 via another 57-56 cliffhanger to annex the Division 1 title, while Class ’95 displayed great team effort to drub Castrol ’96 anew, 69-63, and snatch the Division 2 crown.
Tan was doubly happy as he bagged the regular season MVP award in Division 1. Ditto with Lim who copped the Finals MVP honors. They automatically made it to the elite Mythical Five together with Richard Yu of Dewfoam ’88, and Emerson Go and Juan Borromeo, Jr. of Class ’91.
Christopher Cokaliong of Class ’83 also caught part of the spotlight as he was named the Most Improved Player.
It was the second taste of division championship for Class ’83. The first time they won the title was during the 2000 season.
Class ’83 trailed by eight at the end of the first quarter, 12-20, but rallied back in the middle quarters, 28-18, to gain control of the match, 40-38, entering the payoff period.
Emerson Go topped Class ’91 with 12 points followed by John Joel Lim with 10.
In the other game, four players cashed in double figures for Class ’95 led by Dean Dy Teves with 19 points. Donald Anthony Ting tossed in 17 markers followed by Erwin Ong and Raymond Gollon with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Ting went on to claim the regular season MVP trophy in Division 2, while Teves romped off with the Finals MVP accolade. They outrightly barged into the Mythical Five alongside Christian Espada of Welcoat Paints 2004, and Dreyfuss Ang and Shaun Christopher Wang of Class ’96.
Class ’95 never looked back after ripping the game apart at halftime, 45-29. Class ’96 rallied in the third, 20-8, but Class ’95 neutralized its offense in the closing minutes of the match.
Unfortunately, three players were thrown out of the game. Franklin Neil Ong of Class ’96 was banished from the playing court for punching Erwin Ong. In return, Ong and Michael Tanbonthong were also ejected for second motion. They will all serve their one-game suspensions in the league’s 11th season next year.
