Donald Anthony Ting carved his name in Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association (CECABA) history and his big night was completed as Henkel Philippines ’95 ousted Cokaliong Shipping ’98-A, 85-61, to reach the semifinals of the 10th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup on Thursday night at the City Sports Club-Cebu Gym.
Ting became the league’s first ever player to breach the 3,000-point mark. He finished with 34 points, 16 in the first half that buoyed Class ’94 to a 39-34 lead at the bend.
Dean Dy Teves scored 15 and Joseph James Yu added 12 markers for Class ’95, which grew even fiercer in the third period where it launched a 20-11 rally to mount a 59-45 advantage going into the payoff period.
Class ’95 closed the match with a 26-16 bang to thrash Class ’98-A by 24 points.
Rex Millan had 20 points and Erick Andew So added 18 markers as Class ’98-A proceeded into the shadows.
Earlier, VAG Trading ’94 vanquished the twice-to-beat Shell ’78/85, 65-53, to live and fight for another day.
The game was very close most the way, but Class ’78/85 ran out of steam towards the end. Class ’94 made the most out of the opportunity to forge a rubbermatch.
Class ’78/85 threatened for the last time at 50-56 on a triple by Chester Cokaliong but that was the best it could muster as the Class ’94 mainstays capitalized on their fresher legs and quickness to fluster the older graduates.
Wellington Yu topped Class ’94 with 17 points followed by Stanley Gaw with 15 markers.
Cokaliong, despite being hobbled by the three-man alternating defense of Bronson Peña, Michael Revilla and Johndale Lim, managed a game-high tying 17 points. Wilsyon Yu also had 17 points. Edvin Kaw played despite suffering an injury but was limited to just four points.
