2008 CVIRAA Meet opens today

Department of Education (DepEd) undersecretaries Ramon Bacani and Teodosio Sangil, Jr. spearhead the list of luminaries who will grace today’s kick-off salvo of the 2008 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Meet at the Carlos P. Garcia Sports and Cultural Complex in Tagbilaran City.

Bacani will deliver an inspirational message, while Sangil will be tasked to formally declare the weel-long athletic meet open.

Bacani and Sangil will be joined by Bohol Governor Erico Aumentado, Tagbilaran Mayor Dan Neri Lim, and the rest of the local and provincial officials of Bohol.

 A total of 15 divisions will see action in the multi-sport conclave including Toledo City, which is now back in CVIRAA’s fold after several years of absence.

Undisputed champion Cebu City Niños are raring to go for their 14th overall title.

The points system, which was used in the past two years, will again be utilized in determining the overall winner.

More points are at stake this time with the introduction of poomsae or forms in taekwondo.

Dancesport is also one of the events that will be contested although it is not part of the Palarong Pambansa calendar next month in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

The other sporting disciplines featured in the CVIRAA are athletics, archery, arnis, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, chess, football, gymnastics, sepak takraw, softball,swimming,table tennis, lawn tennis, and volleyball.

The tournament proper starts tomorrow yet in different venues in  Tagbilaran and Maribojoc.

The games will run until the 31st and could not be shortened due to the limited playing venues.
