Cebu wins bid to host Asian U-Games

-

On the heels of a successful hosting of the 62nd National Students Basketball Championships (NSBC), noted Cebuano sports patron Lorenzo “Chao” Sy proudly announced that Cebu won the bid to host the Asian University Games (AUG) Championships set from July 5 to 12 at the Cebu Coliseum.

“It is for the love of sports, especially basketball, that prompted me to bid for Cebu’s hosting of AUG,” said Chao Sy. “Even if I kept on losing in basketball, I still feel enjoyment in it and for as long as I  have the money, I will keep on promoting games”, he added.

Chao Sy said the AUG was originally set in Tokyo, Japan.

10 teams are expected to compete in the week-long sports conclave with representatives from Japan, Korea, and China. Host Philippines will be fielding in five entries, three from Cebu and two from Manila.

The AUG will be the second major sporting event brought to Cebu by Sy after the NSBC.

Meanwhile, former Rep. Prospero “Butch” Pichay described the recently-concluded NSBC as “impressive and very successful.”

Pichay said had the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras went on with their plan to withdraw from the tournament, they would have never won the championship.

For bagging the NSBC crown, no less that a ticket to the Fujian Invitational Tournament in China await the Cobras in the first week of April. They will be joined by high school titlist Benedictine International school (BIS) of Quezon City.

Also, Pichay contemplates thoroughly on holding the 63rd edition of the annual NSBC in his hometown Surigao City. (GGM)
