UV belles off to sizzling start in MLKP beach volley

-

Defending champion University of the Visayas (UV) kicked off its title retention bid on a rousing note, even as three other teams got off to winning starts in the 2nd M. Lhuillier Kwart Padala All-Ladies Beach Volley Open yesterday at the Wiggy’s Beach Resort in Liloan- Cebu.

Under the coaching wits of Raffy Briones, the formidable UV tandem of Jusabelle Brillo and Janez Armie Igot hammered Erika Camille Verano and Herlene Ybarita of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Team A, 25-19.

Brillo and Igot topped last year’s inaugural M. Lhuillier beach volleyball by beating the SWU duo of Janelle Tabio and Marites Natad. The Visayanians went on to rule the prestigious Nestea Beach Volley Season 10 in Boracay Island.

This time, Tabio and Natad are seeing action with different partners. Tabio is now with Florianne Gutierrez under SWU Team A, while Natad is playing alongside Christine Rose Bohol of Arthro Kontra Arthritis.

Arthro’s Natad and Bohol immediately made their presence felt by crushing Aina “Popsie” Laroga and Joy Bonita of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Team B, 25-14.

It was a double whammy for USJ-R as its Team A manned by Gennie Sabas and Michelle Simbajon fell prey to the Janeth Ponte-mentored SWU Team B powered by Jessa Satina and Lorie Mae Layno.

The win, however, wasn’t served on a silver platter as SWU B had to pass through some scary moments before pulling of a 27-25 upset over USJ-R Team A.

Team MLKP of Kennette Garces and Sarah Miculob joined the winners’ circle by edging out Jeremie Montalvo and Kimberly Ybañez of the University of San Carlos (USC), 25-22.

Before the games, a simple opening ceremony was held graced by Liloan municipal councilor Hon. Bobby Motus, event organizer and M. Lhuillier Sports Development Foundation (MLSDF) executive director Eddie B. Ybañez, and Cebu Volleyball Federation (CVF) president Raul Gonzales.

The competition follows a single round robin format with the top two teams per bracket advancing into the crossover semifinals. The winners will then clash for the championship.

Aside from trophies, the champion will receive P5,000, while the second and third will pocket P3,000 and P2,000, respectively. –EBV
