SHS-J Eagles dethrone USC-North in Cherifier cagefest
The Sacred Heart School-Jesuit (SHS-J) dethroned the University of San Carlos (USC) North Campus, 25-17, and captured the Cebu leg title of the 2008 Cherifer Tangkad Sagad 12-Under basketball tournament last Sunday at the Don Bosco covered courts in Brgy. Punta Princesa, this city.
The SHS-J Eagles, manned by Anton Bennet Chua who is the son of noted sports patron Benedict Chua, sailed their way to the coveted crown undefeated. They routed the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), 34-10, before defeating USC-South, 17-12.
In the semifinal, SHS-J bested Danao City-Time Out to set up a title showdown with the USC-North, which also swept its elimination assignments.
Actually, SHS-J, Danao-Time Out and USC-North figured in a triple tie. USC-North was just lucky to have drawn a bye, forcing an SHS-Danao Time Out match for the remaining final slot.
Apart from being the tournament’s newly-crowned champion, the tandem of coach Jed Cabellon and player Jarek Mercaco also beat St. Anthony Learning Center’s duo of of PJ Cardeño and James Bacalso to rule the two-ball competition.
On the other hand, USC-North’s Andre Armenion, son of former UC star Alex Armenion, topped the three-point shootout.
In the guest team category, the Sitlitz One-on-One Clinic of coach Edsel Vallena bagged the title.
