USJ-R stay clean in CESAFI beach volley

The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) of coach Grace Antigua upended Southwestern University (SWU) in the clash of unbeaten squads to top the women’s bracket of the 2nd Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) Beach Volley tournament yesterday at the Inayagan Beach Resort in Naga City.

USJ-R’s Genie Sabas and Michelle Simbajon proved too hot to handle for the SWU pair of Lorie Mae Layno and Jessa Satina, 25-11. With a clean 4-0 clate, the Lady Jaguars are tipped to go all the way to the championship.

In the men’s bracket, USJ-R also strecthed its undefeated streak to three. Up next for the Jaguars is the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), which escaped with a 25-23 victory over the University of Cebu (UC).

UC’s Jonathan Inez and John Francis Llaguno managed to catch up the lead posted by USPF’s James Ryan Rivera and Edward Ybañez, but they failed to sustaintheir momentum as they committed costly errors in the crucial moment of the match.

On the other hand, Roderick Arenasa and Edward Carlo Tecson of the University of San Carlos (USC) slaughtered Karl Edison Lim and George Tampon of the  Cebu Doctors’ University, 25-12.

The CESAFI beach volley action will resume on March 8 at the same venue. The following day, concert will be held at the Cebu Coliseum to formally close what had been another successful CESAFI season. – Marigold P. Lebumfacil
