Visayan Ballers trounce VSMMC
The Visayan Ballers suffered a huge collapse in the third period, but bounced back with aplomb in the windup to repulse the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) cagers, 59-54, and clinch the No.2 spot going into the semifinals of the 3rd Lucky Tableware Basketball Tournament at the Visayas Glass Gym in Brgy. The Visayas Ballers of Senen Marturillas finished the elimination round with a 5-1 win-loss record in a tie with Julia’s Resto Bar. The latter, however, took the top spot due to superior quotient.
Paul Alvarez and Frederick Castañeda had 19 points apiece for the Visayan Ballers, which dictated the tempo of the match right after the opening tip-off to take an eight-point advantage at halftime, 31-23.
The Visayan Ballers, however, caved in offensively in the third quarter, allowing VSMMC of Daks Nutia to forge a 39-all deadlock and even wrest the driver’s seat, 45-42, with a few minutes gone by in the final period.
Fortunately, the Visayas Ballers made the necessary adjustments in the closing minutes of the game to turn the tables on VSMMC at the final buzzer.William “Iam” Aparri, Robert Rafson Chua, and Dax Navarro chipped in 18 points combined for the Visayan Ballers.
In the other game, JR Luceño sparkled with 18 points as Halley’s Team of Edgar Cañete slammed Julia’s Resto Bar, 52-39.
Meanwhile, the classification round of the tournament sponsored by Florita Vallejo, Mic n’ mat Convenience Store, Artkyob/Alberto’s Pizza, Daks Kakanin, Dax Navarro, Hodenz, and Visayan Ballers will wind up at 9 pm today featuring the non-bearing match between Halley’s Team and VSMMC still at the Visayan Glass.
