USJ-R trounces UV in CESAFI volleyball

The University of San Jose-Recoletos Lady Jaguars opened the defense of their CESAFI volleyball crown by beating the University of the Visayas in three sets yesterday as the volleyball tournament started at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation gym.

The Lady Jaguars, fresh from their stint in the University Games in Bacolod City, won 25-18, 25-22, 25-9, to underline their readiness to defend the crown.

After a lopsided first set, the Lady Jaguars relaxed a bit in the early minutes of the second set and fell behind UV. Fortunately, Julett Marikit and former junior RP team member Gennie Sabas, were there to rescue USJ-R from defeat. The Lady Jaguars then went for the kill in the third set as Marikit led a 10-point spree to post an 18-9 lead then finished the set with a 7-0 binge.

In the second game, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Lady Panthers stopped Cebu Doctors University volleybelles 25-17, 25-13, 25-20, for its first win.

The other team that barged into the win column was the University of San Carlos Lady Warriors who dispatched the University of Cebu Lady Webmasters in four sets 25-14, 25-17, 23-25, 25-16.

The results in the men’s division were still unavailable as of this writing.

The volleyball games of the CESAFI continue today with the men playing first.

The reigning CESAFI champion University of San Carlos Warriors play the University of Cebu at 8 a.m. followed by the game between CDU and the USJ-R Jaguars. The last game, before the break, is between UV Lancers and Cebu Institute of Technology Wildcats.

In the afternoon, the USJ-R Lady Jaguars take on the Southwestern University Cobras. CDU and UC play in the second game while USC and USPF play last. All the games will be played at the USPF gym.  — Marigold P. Lebumfacil
