M. Lhuillier zaps Arthro five anew
The M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Jewelers fended off repeated rallies by the gritty Arthro Kontra Arthritis in the windup to hack out an 87-82 victory in the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference on Monday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
Spunky guard Woodrow Enriquez and Ronald Capati each fired 17 points, Jayford Rodriguez scored 14, while Lou Gatumbato and Marlon Basco pitched in 13 markers apiece as the Jewelers of Michel J. Lhuillier and coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba fortified its hold of the second spot in the Visayas Division with an improved 5-2 win-loss record.

Despite playing with only nine players, Arthro was in fighting mood at the start and even enjoyed a 40-38 edge on back-to-back triples by Doroteo Almacin and Jonas Mark Ababon, with
M. Lhuillier had its biggest lead at 11 points, 60-49, and the best Arthro could muster from there was to pull within 58-60 on Almacin’s medium-range jumper with a minute remaining in the third quarter.
The Jewelers restored a double-digit advantage, 79-69, that wobbled Arthro underneath the final two-minute mark of the contest. After Capati and Stephen Padilla hit the insurance shots for the Jewelers, Almacin sank a buzzer-beating triple to peg the final count.
Almacin scattered a league-best 28 points followed by Ababon with 20, but their efforts went for naught as Arthro suffered its third defeat against only one win in the league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) and made possible by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature’s Spring Water, Sulpicio Lines, Accel, Cokaliong Shipping, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.
Over at the Xavier University Gym in Cagayan de Oro City, Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr finally barged into the win column with an inspiring 100-89 victory over the visiting Goldstar Hardware-backed Duterte Agilas-Davao.
