Lancers win, series now 1-1

- Gabby G. Malagar -

Defending champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers turned back the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 94-75, in Game 2 to even their best-of-five championship series for CESAFI’s collegiate crown.

Game 3 is set today at 6 pm at the Cebu Coliseum. Whoever wins tonight will have the proverbial psychological advantage going into Game 4 on Thursday.

Again, UV struggled in the early stages of the game and was down 32-48 at the half. Defeat stared at the Lancers when the Warriors stormed to a 53-34 advantage in the third period. This time around, UV showed why they are the champions. As if on cue, the Green Lancers put together a torrid 25-0 run bridging the third and fourth periods, to tie the count at 69.

The Lancers completed the turnaround by keeping the Warriors scoreless for nearly eight minutes in the final period while building an 85-71 lead with 1:39 left in the game.

This time UV’s shooters stole the show, finding their marks especially in the fourth quarter run where they made five triples. Lanete hurt USC the most by hitting fourth triples including one that tied the count at 69, rousing the delirious pro-UV crowd into frenzy.

The USC Warriors compounded their fourth quarter woes with poor shooting. Unlike in Game 1 where they were hitting their shots, this time around they were hitting bricks. UV also put the clamp on Nino Ramirez rendering him ineffective in orchestrating USC’s offense.

Ariel Mapena topscored for UV with 23 points laced with two triples. Lanete had 18 points; Ritchum Dennison added 13, with three triples, while Michael Luga and Rino Berame adding 12 markers apiece.

Llanto and Ramirez, the Warriors’ scoring duo, finished with 12 points each while Padayao and Giovanni Padillo had identical 10 points.
