Baby Lancers rule again

The University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers beat the University of Cebu (UC) Junior Webmasters, 98-86, last night to sweep their series for the juniors championship of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) at the Cebu Coliseum.

UV trailed 30-48 late in the second period but outscored the Junior Webmasters, 28-12, in the decisive third period to get back into the game. With momentum going their way, UV erected a 15-point advantage, 81-66, with 7:04 to go in the fourth quarter.

However, the resilient Junior Webmasters refused to give up and crept to within four, 83-87, still with over two minutes left in the game. The Baby Lancers, however, showed their endgame savvy by thwarting any UC rally to take the crown.

“Nalipay lang ko nga nakuha namo ug balik ang titulo,” said coach Pepito who steered the Baby Lancers to five CESAFI titles, three against the USJR Baby Jaguars, one against the CIT Wildkittens in 2005 and now against the Junior Webmasters.

Aldwin Felisario rose to the occasion by scoring 25 points for UV, while Cañedo and Viagedor with 14 and 13 points respectively.

Babad topscored for the Junior Webmasters with 19 points, Pelayo Cabañero had 16 points and Joseph Sedurifa had 10 points for UC.

Earlier, the USJR Jaguars scored a come-from-behind 81-80 victory over the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras to snatch third place honors in the collegiate division.

The Cobras were looking to extend the series when they led by 10 points, 80-70, with only 2:35 left in the game after an Eric Zanoria slam. The Jaguars, however, mounted a rally that rattled the Cobras.

Lyndon Gudez paced the Jaguars with 25 points. Mariano Canonigo scored 25 points and Zanoria netted 15 points for the Cobras.
