Villamor, Balbona top CEPCA chess

Godfrey Villamor and John Francis Balbona topped their respective divisions to emerge as September’s best in the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) Chess Monthly Tournament.

Villamor scored 4.5 points after five rounds to top the junior division. King James Torres placed second with 4 points while Jeroni James Vinculado garnered third place with 3 points.

In the kiddies division, brothers John Francis and Marq Gabrielle Balbona finished 1-2, with Jan Cleomar Tilus taking the third spot. The Balbonas and Tilus were all sporting 4 points after five rounds. John Francis, however, took the title after the tiebreaker where he earned 14.5 points. His brother Marq Gabrielle gained 14 points and Tilus had 13 points.

The triple tie for first place happened when John Francis and Tilus split the point while Marq Gabrielle defeated Marvie Abucay. — Caecent No-ot Magsumbol
