More balanced competition assured in 3rd GUV Cup

-

The organizers assured yesterday of a more balanced and highly-competitive action when the 3rd Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup For Women unfolds on September 22 at a still undisclosed venue.

This is because the organizing Cebu Volleyball Association (CEVA) led by its president Glenn Anthony Soco made some modifications on the clustering, residency rules and composition of team for this year’s tournament.

As revealed during yesterday’s general assembly at the Cebu Provincial Capitol Social Hall, the cities will be under one cluster this time to give them a more balanced action against the municipalities.

With that, there will now be a total of seven clusters.

The two clusters for the municipalities, on the other hand, have been divided into two sub-clusters, one for the mainland and the other one for the island.

After the cluster championships, the top two coaches of each cluster will be given prerogative to pick reinforcements from the other teams provided that the player is within their cluster.

This is being done to make a team’s composition stronger as they move up to the battle for the overall title. Each team shall be composed of a total of 14 players.

Also, the players can now represent a municipality or city based on its place of birth or permanent residency.

To spice up the games, a cheerdance contest has been added among the highlights of the province-wide contest.

A total of 46 teams have already confirmed their participation in the 3rd GUV Cup. The newest entry is the municipality of Malabayoc.

The number of participating squads, according to Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia, is a strong indication that sport is truly a vehicle for unity.

Governor Garcia recalled how the event helped the Province of Cebu stay as one after the controversial “Sugbuak” issue way back in 2005.

“Dako kaayo mog natampo sa pagkahiusa sa atong pinalanggang probinsya. A unity that we must now use to further better our Province as a flatform of which to spring up the eventual recognition of Cebu as the province that will be a beacon of pride and hope,” Garcia said. — Caecent No-ot Magsumbol
