Cebu City dominates BFP chessfest

Team Cebu City scored a 3-0 sweep over Bohol in the fifth and final round to rule the chess event of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-7 Sportsfest 2007 over the weekend.

Cebu City, manned by Winston Neri, Franklin Caylan, and Leo Magallon topped the two-day tilt with 13.0 points. They were all gold medallists in their respective boards.

Emmanuel Arcamo, Percival Lasam and Tyrone Gocela edged out Quentin Dumala, Teodofredo Sinco and Roel Anthony Ordonez of Negros, 3-0, to settle for second place honors with 10.0 points.

Bohol, powered by Paulino Manding, Edgar Pamaylaon, and Julieto Manding, managed to cop the third place trophy despite their last round debacle to Cebu City with 8.5 points.

Cebu City Province North finished fourth with 5.0 points, while Negros and Cebu Province South landed at fifth and sixth with 4.5 and 3.0 points, respectively.

In the VECO-Aboitizland goodwill chess match, VECO crushed Aboitizland in the two-day series, 14-6. In the first game, VECO won, 6-4, and then followed it up with an 8-2 thrashing of Aboitizland.

The victorious VECO players include Nic Cuizon, Jgerms Caballo, Jun Decorina, Danny Alfafara, Noel Modesto, Hanzel Rejadillo, Nelson Perez, Joselito Nacrongayo, Wendell Peligro, and Lemuel Gerson.

Aboitizland, on the other hand, is composed of Maggi Dionson, Mandy Baria, Clarence Deada, Junie Omega, Jade Garzon, Roger Pesole, Allain Montenegro, Earl Retuya, Richard Amit, and Nenchelle Cortes.

Meanwhile, the August edition of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) Monthly Handicapping tournament is set at 1 pm tomorrow at the Deep Blue Woodpusher CDFE at the SM City-Cebu.

The event, which will follow a five-round Swiss system format, is open to all CEPCA members.
