Castrol ''96 walked down a jittery road before cruising past Cokaliong Shipping ''98, 60-57, in the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association''s 9th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup over the weekend at the City Sports Club-Cebu gym.
Rogelio Donayre had 11 points and dished out seven assists followed by Rushmarc Lariosa with 10 points on top of 11 rebounds for Class ''96, which assured itself of a Top Four slot with an 8-2 win-loss record.
Mark Ryan Babor scored only six, but it was more than enough for him to breach the 1,000-point mark, becoming the 42nd player to achieve the feat since the league''s inception nine years ago.
Erick Andrew So unloaded 21 points, while Robinson Yap pumped in 14 markers and 13 rebounds for Class ''98, which slipped to 5-5.
In the other game, JV Shop N'' Shop ''97 overcame JRJ Enterprises 2000, 71-67, to improve its win-loss record to 5-4.
Wendell Maurin got the surprise of everyone by netting in a career-high 19 points on a 9-of-17 shooting from the field for Class ''97. Bryan Labus had a solid double-double show of 15 points and 11 rebounds followed by Aubrey Jones Ibones with 12 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists.
John Bryan Lo scattered 29 points on top of seven rebounds and four assists but his one-man army couldn''t make a difference as Class 2000 suffered its seventh setback against only three victories.
Over at the CEC Gym, Neo-Neo Grill ''85 clobbered Cebu Hardware ''84 in the first and fourth quarters to come up with an 81-66 rout, while Sun Gold 2005 pounded ACY Shipping 2006 in the entire 40-minute battle to pull off a 72-54 cakewalk.
Alfred Reyes became the league''s newest revelation by drilling in a career-best 20 points and five rebounds for Class ''85 on a 10-of-18 sniping from the field.
Joel Chan was similarly explosive in recording the first triple-double of the season with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for Class ''85, which got off to a 23-15 start and then closed the match with a 26-15 burst for the 15-point romp.
Star center Sammy Sia exploded with a season-high 40 points on top of 18 caroms, but his singular offensive outburst went for naught as Class ''84 crashed to its 10th defeat against only one win.
Kent Benedict Uy and Moroni Jones Uy, on the other hand, combined for 30 points and six rebounds to power Class 2005 to its fourth victory in nine starts. They kept Class 2006 at bay since taking a 35-21 edge at halftime.
Junwynn Dy had 24 points, 11 rebounds and three steals followed by Nolsie John Cisneros with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists but they still went home on a pensive note as Class 2006 still got zilch in nine games.
